While it’s technically called the “Honda Civic Tour”, a more appropriate name would be the “Honda #%!(*@ Awesome Kick Ass Tour”. That’s because this co headline between My Chemical Romance and Blink 182 has energy to spare and a passionate crowd that will go to ends of the earth for these bands. While MCR were ok, Blink really stole this show, only their second in the Boston area in the last 6 years. The Comcast Center played host to the shenanigans, and the nearly 20000 who came out weren’t deterred from the pouring rain or icy wind on the unseasonal August night. Watching Blink 182 play is something everyone should try to experience. The trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom Delonge, and Travis Barker is arguably one of the most influential bands of all time. Their signature Californian, punk pop sound has been copied and adapted by hundreds of bands, but it has never really been matched. The live show is where this dynamic music really sounds. Hoppus and Delonge bounce around the stage like gazelles while Barker smashes up the drum kit like a stampeding rhino. Other minor things like great lights and hilarious interactions by Delonge and Hoppus in between songs made for a truly enjoyable show. Car commercials took up the intermission between MCR and Blink, and I was more relieved than anything by the time the headliners took the stage. They opened up with “Feeling This” and worked at a furious pace from then on. They amazingly crammed a 22 song list into a 75 minute set, and even though most of Blink’s catalog is under 3 minutes, it’s impressive nonetheless. The best stretch of the show were songs 6-8. “I Miss You”, “Stay Together For The Kids”, and my personal favorite “Dumpweed” had fans screaming with pleasure for around 11 nonstop minutes. The later was more energetic than the lightning storm in the background, and the applause afterwards rivaled the claps of thunder in the distance. After a little bit of a lul the veteran performers kicked it into high gear with the smash hit “First Date”, which showcased Barker’s insane skills on the drums better than any other track of the night. Watching Barker play is something like watching Picasso paint; just a true master of craft showing it off to the masses. The song marked a high point that would be hard to top, but true to their form the rock gods took the show to another level with a dynamic, 4 song encore that started off with a tremendous, 4 minute drum odyssey from Barker. The punks then ripped through “Carousel”, “Dammit” and a shredding version of “Family Reunion” to cap off a balls out down and dirty rock fest that left no one in attendance disappointed. Now to be fair, My Chemical Romance weren’t bad, they just were to overpowering, kind of like a strong blue cheese to Blink’s mildly strong provolone. They did have a shredding moment when they crushed the power ballad “Mama”
