One guarantee to the 14000 fans who went to the recent Jason Aldean performance at the Comcast Center: you will never have more fun at a concert. It seems like everything went right for the June 5th show. From the perfect 70 degree weather to the dream set list that Aldean concocted. Eric Church was also about as good an opening act as you’ll ever see, and between the two of them it was a real super ticket for any country fan. While nobody will be referring to New England as a mecca of country music the genre has gained immense popularity over the past few years. Now every major summer tour in the country music circuit includes a stop in Boston. Luckily Aldean’s “My Kinda Party” tour was no exception. Aldean has been one of the biggest faces of country music for the last few years and has scored monster hits along the way. New England fans recently were familiarized with Aldean from his performance in August at the New England Country Music Festival in Gillette Stadium. The show was sold out and the crowd were obviously hardcore Aldean fans, there was no fronting, everyone knew every word of every song and that’s not always the case for a Massachusetts country music crowd. Eric Church got the crowd warmed up with an energetic and powerful set. Church’s stage presence set him apart, it appeared as if he was teetering on an emotional breakdown every song. It’s obvious he has an extreme passion for his art and he wears it on his sleeve. Church didn’t speak much in between songs, and he constantly willed the crowd to get louder and rowdier. The highlight from the set was “How Bout You” which featured perfect vocals and concluded with Church spraying the crowd with a water cannon. The energy in the song, his 2nd of the night, set the tone for the evening to come. While Church did clear the path, Aldean ran right over it. Jason came on at around 9:20 PM amid earsplitting screams in the darkened amphitheater. A 30 foot tall curtain hung from the rafters and Aldean’s silhouette appeared. The curtain then dropped and Aldean and his band went into a booming rendition of “Tattoos On This Town”. Aldean then cranked out his two biggest hits, “Amarillo Sky” and “Big Green Tractor” back to back. When fans finally could catch their breath after the first three tracks they noticed the spectacular stage setup that Aldean brought. The craziest pieces of technology were the light brackets hanging above the stage, which lowered, changed color, and tilted on angles throughout the night. The real star of the show, however, was the music. After switching up the pace with some slower, melodic tracks Aldean pulled out his best track of the night, an emotionally charged power ballad about memories. The crowd tremendously appreciated the track and a rousing ovation followed the stellar performance. Aldean played the local crowd skillfully throughout the night, slipping the word “Massachusetts” anywhere it would fit in between lines. Aldean’s biggest nod to Boston were his guest guitar crew for the evening, the Red Sox pitching rotation. The crowd roared with delight every time Aldean invited a player on stage to switch out his six string. Josh Becket, John Lackey, Clay Bucholzz, Daniel Bard, and Jon Lester all made appearances, inciting “YANKEES SUCK” chants from the crowd in the process. The end of the show was spectacular. The last song from the main set was a jammed out version of the upbeat country-rock hit “Hicktown” that got the crowd yearning for more. For the encore, the Sox joined Aldean on stage for a cover of Bon Jovi’s “Dead Or Alive” before a thunderous, rowdy finale of Aldean’s smash “She’s Country”. The crowd left satisfied with a spectacular 3 hours of music courtesy of Aldean and Church, and next time the “My Kinda Party” tour comes through Boston you can bet I’ll be there, it’s a remarkable show that has it all; emotion, power, energy, and above all some badass music.
