In recent months, infamous matching and online dating app Tinder has been used for more than just a few corny pick-up lines and late night meet-ups; a new wave of online campaigning has seen Bernie supporters using the app to rally more votes for the candidate. Now, the application itself has taken a political turn, and introduced a new feature: Swipe the Vote.
While the feature itself is buried within the application, disguised as just another user profile, it’s a diamond hidden amongst Tinder’s plastic gems. So while you say goodbye to 23-year-old Johan, say hello to Swipe the Vote.
The general features of Swipe the Vote include ten or so social and political issues that are surrounding the current presidential election, each with their own profile, to which you can swipe either left or right on. The profiles of each issue contain an unbiased summary, and the reasoning behind both supporters and opponents.
One of the issues raised was the debate on repealing Obamacare. Some of the supporters of repealing Obamacare have said their reasoning for wanting the repeal is that low-wage American’s have reported working less hours, and that the elimination of Obamacare will force healthcare insurance companies to compete more fiercely, which means lower costs overall on healthcare. Meanwhile, some Opponents of the fight to repeal Obamacare have said that the bill has given affordable healthcare to every American citizen.
Other issues to swipe on included topics like increased funding for education, decreased funding for the military, the legalization of marijuana, protection of women’s rights and same-sex marriage, drilling for oil and gas in the U.S., and even stricter laws for online piracy.
Once the survey is done, the presidential candidates who most match the views of the user are listed, with most compatible at the top of the list, and least at the bottom.
Quite possibly the most progressive thing about this feature is not the fact that it helps users to make an opaque and often confusing process a lot easier, but it also helps register the user to vote if they are not already!
Tinder has jumped on the political bandwagon in more than one way, but this happens to be the most progressive, interactive, and beneficial thing any social media platform has done for the upcoming presidential election. It almost seems a little ridiculous to say that you figured out who to vote for via Tinder, but it’s an honest and relatively unbiased way to accurately match yourself with the candidate you connect most with.
While you won’t be making plans to meet with Bernie, Hillary, or Trump any time soon, Tinder will definitely help in making plans for the future of America.
