In today’s music, a hit radio single can launch a band quickly into mass popularity. This is precisely what happened with Adelaide, Australia native Atlas Genius.
Originally formed in November of 2009, the band currently consists of brothers Keith and Michael Jeffery. While Keith provides lead vocals and guitar, Michael plays the drums.
In 2013, the band released their first full-length album “When It Was Now,” which featured the well-received radio hit “Trojans.” This launched Atlas Genius into the wider spotlight. They have seen nothing but success since.
The group didn’t stop there—they released their sophomore album “Inanimate Objects” in August of 2015. While many consider the production of a sophomore album to be a make or break for musicians, Atlas Genius has had no such trouble. “Inanimate Objects” is a cohesive album that clearly demonstrates Atlas Genius’ growth since their debut album.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with Keith Jeffery as he prepared for the band’s North American tour with Skylar Grey, sponsored by Journeys.
When asked about the success of “Trojans” and the first album’s influence when writing and recording “Inanimate Objects,” Jeffery explained that “with the first album there were no expectations,” but that the subsequent success “changed the way we thought about music… It was a different band, really.”
Given that “When It Was Now” was recorded in Australia and “Inanimate Objects” in Los Angeles after a whirlwind of touring and show appearances, it isn’t surprising that Atlas Genius’ sound has matured.
Possibly the biggest effect that touring had on the band’s music was that it brought more direct focus to how the songs translate into stage performances. With “Inanimate Objects,” Jeffery emphasized how important it is that the songs perform well live.
“All you can do is give 100 percent while you’re up there,” he explained.
Of any place the band has toured, Jeffery continued that his favorites have been Portland, OR and Austin, TX.
“I don’t know what it is about the cultures there, but the crowds’ energy is just off the charts.”
Atlas Genius comes to the Paradise Lounge in Boston on April 20 with Skylar Grey. For tickets to see them perform live and possibly add Boston to Jeffery’s list of most energetic crowds, visit atlasgenius.com/tour.
