On the afternoon of March 31, Boston faced difficult weather conditions with strong winds coming from the northeast.
Since the University of Massachusetts Boston is located right by the shore, the campus experienced especially direct exposure to high winds.
The plaza in front of the Healey Library was affected the most, giving students a hard time while walking through the area.
As extreme conditions progressed, building materials from the roof of the library were dislodged, posing a possible danger to people walking by the building.
At 3:39 p.m., UMass Boston sent out a text message alert, urging all members of the UMass Boston community to seek alternative routes.
In taking an extra step of precaution, the plaza was barricaded until late in the evening when wind speeds decreased.
In an email to the student body, UMass Boston administration announced that the materials had been taken off the roof and that it is once again safe to walk through the area.
