Welcome Week here at the University of Massachusetts Boston was packed with a lot of fun and free activities. One in particular was Paint Nite.
For those not familiar, Paint Nite brings people together to create works of art over cocktails. Professional artists and party hosts guide a relaxing night of creativity and delicious drinks.
Paint Nite has gained popularity in the last couple of years thanks to CEO Dan Hermann and partner Sean McGrail, two Boston natives. Before the idea was conceived, Hermann and McGrail attended a party at a painting studio with, of course, beer and wine. Both loved the idea of bonding with their friends and unleashing their creativity at the same time. Shortly after, they reached out to local bars, restaurants, and local artists. The idea took off, more specifically in the Somerville area, where they two established themselves.
Since this was a school-sponsored event, beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages were not served. The painting station for the night was quiet and equally spaced out to accommodate for elbow space. Participants painted peacefully and enjoyed their time bonding with friends while being creative. Music was also played in the background.
Stan Sykes led this week’s Paint Night from Fun Enterprises. The event was held on the terrace of the Campus Center, where two sessions were held.
The event was free for students, but, due to limited space for each session, students had to reserve a spot in advance. This reservation was on a “first-come, first-serve” basis.
The evening’s painting was Syke’s rendition of the famous Rocky Mountain Landscape, originally by Albert Bierstadt.
Throughout the whole session, Syke made participants feel at ease. He knew that the majority of attendees were not painters, so his instructions were short and easy for beginners to follow. No experience was required.
