All month, Apple has captivated its loyal fans with the release of the iPhone 7. Preorders are already sold out, and the strikingly bold jet black color was widely well received. However, the controversy surrounding Apple’s decision to remove the headphone jack and provide wireless earbuds that are compatible with the phone is running rampant.
There is an option to buy a separate headphone jack accessory that plugs into the lightning port of the phone in order to listen to audio with conventional headphones. But this brings into question the purpose of not providing a jack in the first place. This is assuming that Apple is doing this to show how innovative they have been this year, or that they’re creating a style that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Being an Android user, I can’t help but wonder why every time a new iPhone is announced, the masses panic. Everything is put on hold to argue over new features that everyone ends up accepting by the time another phone is announced and another iOS released. I’m not going to argue for either Android or Apple being better than the other; whatever phone you’re comfortable with is the best one.
From a perspective of an Android user, though, it seems to me like this is just another attempt to cash in on exclusive accessories. It also comes across as a minor inconvenience considering that no matter what, you’re going to lose your headphones within a couple months, wireless or wired.
In Apple’s defense, however, technology takes risks to innovate. Our reactions to these new features decide what stays and what goes, especially when we vote with our cash for what’s the best. The Bluetooth-like technology of Apple’s wireless earbuds will probably end up sounding very nice and stylish, and a treat for those who prefer wireless headphones anyway.
It’s in our nature to lose things, as well as dislike new things that innovate the design of something that’s intertwined in our lives. In other words, sure you’ll lose that new pair of wireless headphones the second you look away, but it’s not the end of the world.
Enjoy your new one if you do decide to buy a iPhone 7. And if you don’t, then still enjoy the phone that makes you happy.
