Boston hosts a wide range of activities for the summer, especially for those on a college budget. This summer was no different, especially if you were in the mood for free live music.
Here are examples of some of the many opportunities for live music that have been going on all summer long.
In the midst of the Boston Calling hiatus for its annual fall festival, Crash Line Productions, which produces the Boston Calling Music Festival itself, opted to host a series of Boston Calling Block Parties, which are held on Dewey Square just right off of South Station.
The event is open to public every Thursday until Sept. 15. Unfortunately, with drinks being sold around the ground, attendees must be 21 plus in order to pass through the gate to get to the stage where bands and performers were playing. People who attended were offered board games, cornhole stations, and lounge chairs to enjoy while they listen to the performers.
Like many of the bands that had previously played at Boston Calling festivals, the lineups varied from genre to genre. They put a bigger emphasis on bringing Boston native bands in their stage.
Not too far away from Boston Calling, another live music event was also playing: the Boston Harbor Hotel’s Summer in the City series. Every Tuesday through Thursday, Boston Harbor Hotel hosted its event. Their lineups ranged from rat pack to blues to pop soul.
With Boston being known as one of the most academically oriented place in the world, some universities, like Berklee College of Music, hosted live events throughout the summer. Berklee hosted their annual Summer Concerts, which was held at Kendall Plaza every week.
The university featured their diverse array of students from around the world performing jazz, whether it was some popular pieces or some of their own. People watching could simply sit on a lounge chair or on the grass and enjoy the soothing music while catching up with friends.
These are just a few of the free live music opportunities that were and are happening in Boston. With summer coming to an end, be sure to take advantage of what the city offers.
