Angie Khaw is one of the most self-determined and impassioned students on campus. And if you don’t know her yet, you’ll meet her soon. She’ll make sure of it.
As the vice president of the Accounting and Finance Academy (AFA), Angie has transformed one of the most inactive and unappreciated clubs into a driving force at UMB. The AFA, which formally represented only a few students, now sponsors numerous events and activities around campus.
“We put in a lot of effort to bring in speakers. Fidelity came to the school to teach portfolio management and investment strategies. We have resume-building workshops. We’ve even planned a trip to the Boston Reserve Bank,” Angie announced enthusiastically.
Angie has been a real resource for UMB students, organizing their financial lives and motivating them in their careers. As graduation approaches, Angie plans on becoming a certified financial advisor. But it’s not just finance that makes Angie’s world go round: it’s her genuine good nature and willingness to assist others.
“I just like helping others,” said Angie. “I’m a tutor, too. I help students in Intro to Information Systems and Intro to Financial Management.” And that’s not all. Angie participates in the Ambassador Outreach Program. This program helps new students assimilate into life at UMB, making the campus a friendly and inviting place. “I want people to feel welcomed here,” Angie said. To UMB Students, Angie offered some advice:
“Take advantage of the opportunities you have while you’re here,” encouraged Angie. “UMB is extremely diverse, and there are lots of people worth knowing. Make something of it. Let people know what your interests are. Use every chance you get.”
It’s hard to imagine that such an independent and free-spirited woman could ever be shy, but Angie openly admits that she did not used to be the opinioned go-getter she is today. “If you ask anyone, they’ll tell you I used to be a quiet person. But through UMB I’ve learned to express my own ideas and make them happen.” Angie proudly insisted.
Angie’s parents contributed to her hardworking, assertive, attentive and positive attitude towards school. “My parents played a major role in motivating me. We came to Massachusetts when I was two, and we worked hard for everything. That’s where I get these attributes: my parents. I know that nothing comes easy. No pain; no gain.”
Even a woman as motivated and accomplished as Angie needs to unwind once in a while. When asked what she likes to do with her free time, Angie responded, “I like to paint. Over the summer and winter vacations, I got into ceramic paintings. I found it to be really relaxing.”
Angie also likes to spend time at the gym. “Cardio is a good stress reliever,” she said.
She will be graduating this year. As a cultured, poised, motivated, and giving student, Angie is bound to make big changes. She has already made big changes for UMB. Who knows what she’ll come up with next?
