This Presidents’ Day weekend the Somerville Theatre will be hosting the 30 annual Boston Science Fiction Film Festival. A 24 hour marathon of the greatest science fiction movies to grace celluloid, and, as expected, there will be absolutely no sex within two miles of the event-they fought the zoning board like true Jedi warriors, but to no avail.
This year’s list of films includes great films such as The Time Machine (the original version), Superman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, TXH 1138, Repo Man, and Planet of the Apes (again the original, not a shitty re-make). Along with the feature length films are a collection of shorts including “Last Flight of the Osiris” and “Duck Dodgers.”
Let me get this straight, 24 hours of Orson Wells, Christopher Reeve, Emilio Estevez, George Lucas, Charlton Heston, foam rubber suits, and Daffy Duck!? This can’t be right! It’s every nerd’s wettest and greatest dream come true (sorry, Princess Leia). But wait there’s more! Godzilla, the king of all monsters, will be appearing in a showing of his first film. A 24 hour marathon of these great classics can only result in sensory overload and a sore ass.
For those who think that this is just a night of old, outdated movies (which it is, but what’s wrong with that?) new movies will also be playing, like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and the science fact flick October Sky. Also this year Director Christopher Coppola is the special guest. Christopher Coppola has directed the television shows The Jersey, The Journey of Allen Strange”, and “Ballad of a Gunfighter (if you’ve never heard of him or of any of these shows it’s all right, neither have I).
He will be showing his newest film The Creature of the Sunny Side Up Trailer Park. Also he will be having a question and answer session on Friday the 18, the day before the official start of the festival and the 24 hour marathon. Some of the greatest cult sci-fi movies of all time (excluding Star Wars and Star Trek and all related properties) in one lump sum.
Sure you could go to Blockbuster, but you probably won’t find some of these films, or have as large a screen as the theater. The marathon starts Saturday Feb 19 at noon and ends Sunday Feb 20 at noon. Tickets cost $40.00 plus all the money you’ll spend on caffeinated drinks to stay awake.
