A few weeks ago, The Mass Media published an editorial encouraging our readers to go out and vote in the Democratic primary elections. We would like to do so once more. Although it may seem like we are beating a dead horse, it is because we feel the voting process is in danger of becoming a dead horse that we reiterate the point. So get out the vote!
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts will be choosing its next governor on Tuesday, November 5. There are three questions on the ballot, questions that directly affect millions of people across the state, including students, faculty, and staff on the UMass Boston campus. So get out the vote!
Again, we only repeat what was said in this space a few weeks ago because of its extreme importance. Voting is a responsibility of all American citizens and it is essential to any democratic society. So get out the vote!
It’s rather simple: Vote, and then you become part of the political process toward change. If you don’t, then the status quo will remain. For example, the state’s economy is in dire situation, and many of the leaders who will be responsible for repairing it will be up for election next Tuesday. It’s important that qualified, responsible people be placed in office. So get out the vote!
There are numerous reasons why a Massachusetts resident should be more than eager to head to the voting booths. However, the numbers don’t reflect it. Why individuals feel that electoral abstention is the way to go, and then proceed to be the loudest, most vocal spokespeople of all that is wrong in the state, we don’t know. Don’t fall into this state of apathy and hypocrisy, and don’t let others do the same.
So get out the vote!
