The beginning of school for students who are new and those who are returning is a fairly stressful time, what with adding and dropping classes and even trying to find out where your classes are. Here’s a little something to help you relax.

Tuesday, September 3, is the beginning of Opening Week. For your entertainment, the Coalboilers will be performing from 1-3p.m. on the upper level of the Quinn Administration building. If you’re not in the mood for music, there’s always the Harbor Art Gallery, which will be showing the student-created artwork of Ben Merris, David Klee, and Sarah Howe in Damn the Torpedoes, from 11a.m.-6p.m.

Wednesday brings in radio station WMIX Stunt Boy George, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the plaza between McCormack and Wheatley Hall. For those unfamiliar with the sculpture park around UMass, there will be tours sponsored by Arts on the Point, leaving the Harbor Art Gallery at noon and 2p.m.

Paul Tucker, Director of Arts on the Point, said it’s going to be a “wonderful, insightful, invigorating, and compelling tour of the sculptures that are there as part of Arts on the Point. There will be a close examination of the Bill Tuckers, the cubes over by Wheatley, Luis Hernandez’s alligators, Dennis Oppenheim’s ‘Search Burst,’ and ‘The Pots and Kettles Called Black’ by the Quinn Cafeteria with the hopes of perhaps walking out and maybe ending with ‘Huru’ out front.”

The Harbor Art Gallery will still be open to students throughout the week at said hours and, for Wednesday, there will be a performance by The Chester Brezniak Quintet as part of the Showcase on the Plaza series from 2:30-4p.m. in front of the Quinn Administration building.

To wrap up the week, there will be a WUMB live broadcast from the Student Organizations Fair from 11:30-2p.m. on Thursday, September 4. For the rest of the week, the Harbor Art Gallery is open to those who can find the time to sit back and enjoy the artwork. Welcome back and have a great week.
