I would like to express my approval of the current appearance of the UMass Boston parking garage. We live in a topsy-turvy world that, unfortunately, seems to be gradually deteriorating right before our eyes (the War in Iraq, the pop culture status of Brittany Spears, and the demand for fried tofu). We, as society, come up with patchwork solutions that are ineffective in the long term. Is this not reflected in the state of the garage? Even if not intentional, is it not a work of art? I suggest that the garage can teach us something, but only if it continues to crumble at its own pace. Proposal: no more high cost repairs; funds for maintenance should derive from private institutions (patrons and art centers alike); team construction workers and art majors to work with the garage for class credits. If one takes a moment to consider my rough proposal, one would see there is some wisdom to it.
