Senior attacker Josh Stolp became the hero du jour when he tallied his sixth goal of the game in overtime as the men’s lacrosse team beat the Panthers of Plymouth State 12-11.
The victory marked the first time this season that the Beacons recorded back-to-back wins. The team also conquered Massachusetts Maritime Academy 10-6 on April 16.
It was looking bleak for the Beacons. The team was down by as much as three goals late in the fourth period when Stolp took charge, scoring two goals in the last three minutes of regulation. UMB had control and the lead earlier in the game as the team took a 4-3 advantage to start the second period. The Panthers, however, fought back to tie the game up by halftime and then took the lead in the second half.
UMB freshman Ryan O’Rourke continues to shine in his first season of collegiate lacrosse, scoring three goals and three assists. Mike Forns chipped in with a goal and an assist as well.
Goaltender Nick Eaton came up with 10 saves for the Beacons and his PSU counterpart Mike Rodrick stopped the ball 16 times.
The Beacons will next be in action on Thursday March 24 against Salve Regina at 3pm. The team will then close out the regular season on Saturday, March 26 against a tough squad from Keene State at 1pm.
