Despite a strong performance by senior forward Andreen Gilpin, who had another one of her patented double-double (27 points, 20 rebounds), the Panthers of Plymouth State College ruined Senior Day for the women’s basketball team by defeating the Beacons 82-76.
The win was the 30th straight victory for the Panthers over the Beacons, a streak that dates back to the 1980s. The loss came two days after UMB came up with an exciting victory over Framingham State College 76-71. Junior guard Indya Mitchell (20 points) scored the game-winning basket with a three pointer from the left corner with only ten seconds remaining. Senior forward Laura Wolfram contributed with a double-double, scoring a career high 15 points in the contest.
The Plymouth State game was the last home game for four Beacon players. Along with Gilpin and Wolfram, UMB said good-bye to seniors Jamila Gales and Kristen Bowes.
The Panthers received offensive contributions from multiple sources. Five Plymouth State players scored in double figures. The first half was close as the teams battled back and forth, even though the Panthers took a seven-point advantage into the locker room.
Plymouth State extended their lead in the second half to as much as 20 points. UMB could do very little to climb back into the contest, although Gales pumped in 19 points to go along with seven boards.
The Beacons lost to Huskies of Southern Maine on Tuesday, February 18, 67-53. Their record stands at 13-11 after the loss. The Beacons end the regular season with a matchup at Western Connecticut State on Saturday, February 22, at 1pm. The teams squared off against each other in January with UMB coming out on top 73-60. The seedings for the Little East Conference tournament won’t be settled until the final games have concluded.
