The night of January 29 was a huge success for UMass Boston’s women’s ice hockey club. The team secured an impressive victory over the Rams of the University of Rhode Island with the score of 10-0. The Beacons impressed many, having six different players score at least one goal.
The game started off with a goal scored by freshman Kelly Rowe, followed by another goal scored by teammate Sebrina Monsen.
The second period consisted of four more Beacon goals. Freshman Gabrielle Goodrow scored with assists from Rowe and Monsen. Rowe then scored again, followed by a goal scored by freshman Kelly Maloney. The second period scoring ended when freshman Molly Norton found the back of the net for her first of two goals on the night.
The third period was not much different from the second period as the Beacons continued to punish the Rams on the scoreboard. Eight minutes into the period, freshman Katie Reardon popped in her first goal of the game. With another slash to the Rams, Norton then scored another goal, assisted by Reardon and Averill.
A few minutes later, Reardon scored once again, causing more frustration amongst the Rams. With only a minute and a half left, the Beacons left their mark on the rink when Rowe scored the last goal of the night, ending the game with a score of 10-0.
Scoring wasn’t the only highlight of the night. Freshman goaltender Shannon Palmer made six saves in 22 minutes, and freshman Katie Frossard stopped 10 shots in 38 minutes, bringing the team to this shutout victory.
Though URI was not successful in scoring, Audrey Wingate turned away 51 shots for the Rams.
The UMass Beacons’ next game will be on February 7, at 7:00pm when they take on New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire.
