The UMass Boston women’s basketball team tumbled out of a potential first round home game in the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament by ending the season on a three-game losing streak, the most recent setback being a 80-63 to Western Connecticut State.
The loss caps the Beacons’ season at an overall record of 13-12, and 6-8 in the LEC. The team finished with a similar record last season (14-12, 6-8).
The Beacons got a solid contribution from senior forward Andreen Gilpin, who turned in another double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds). UMB received a team high 16 points from center Jamila Gales, while senior guard Kristen Bowes had a good all around day (15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists). However, the performances were not good enough to overcome the Colonials, who actually out rebounded the Beacons (52-38), a feat not easily accomplished. Forward Tory Anderton scored a game high 20 points and center Krtistie Brickner had a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds).
UMB headed into the LEC tournament as the fifth seed and played fourth seeded Keene State on Tuesday, February 25. The teams split the season series, each winning on its home court. If the Beacons defeated Keene State, it will then play in the semi-finals on Friday, February 28 at the campus of the remaining highest seed. The championship game will be the following day at 3pm.
