Just a few days ago, the Integrated Food Security Phrase Classification published a report stating that Gaza is starving. The IPC carried out a food insecurity analysis in December 2023, determining that famine would occur if there was not a ceasefire and a distribution of supplies and food to the population of Gaza. Three months ago, it was projected that a famine was expected to “occur anytime between mid-March and May 2024.” [1] It is now nearing the end of March, and those predictions have become reality.
In conjunction with the rising death toll—which has passed 30,000 fatalities, [2] including more than 13,000 children [3]—and the serious healthcare crisis, Gaza is experiencing an acute humanitarian crisis. It’s not some abstract idea or theory, and it is not disguised or hidden. The mass death, destruction and suffering of the people of Gaza is on our phones, laptops and televisions. We quite literally carry the weight of carnage, tears and unheard prayers in our pockets.
Although it has taken a shamefully long time for many members of the international community to call for an end to the war, even countries like the United States have begun to realize the severity of Israel’s assault. But this cannot be said for people who continue to support the actions of the Israeli government.
At this point in time, it is extremely unnerving to recognize that there are a plethora of people who remain comfortable with the dire situation in Gaza. It is difficult to believe that many rationalize, support or even revel in the ongoing horrific violence and destruction. There have been hundreds of protests and actions calling for a ceasefire and demanding that the situation be recognized as a genocide, not simply a retaliatory attack.
Even in Israel, many citizens have risked their lives and lost respect from their loved ones because they participated in anti-war initiatives. Hundreds of Israelis have participated in protests calling for the return of hostages taken by Hamas and for an immediate ceasefire. [4] Understanding and calling for the dignity of human lives is not absent in Israel, regardless of the choices made by politicians and the assault carried out by the military.
To be opposed to the bombing, blockade and starvation of Gaza is rooted in having a conscience. It is a conviction stemming from knowing what is right and what is wrong. Conflict is not always black and white, but the consequences of the Israel-Hamas War certainly cannot be painted in grey.
It does not matter what one’s opinion or perspective is on the existence of the state of Israel or the occupation of the Palestinian territories. No matter the personal conviction, it should be universally recognizable that the Israeli assault on Gaza is resulting in a direct violation of basic human rights. People on all points of the political spectrum must advocate for aid and resources to be delivered into Gaza so Palestinians can receive the nourishment, healthcare and shelter that all humans deserve.
Furthermore, it is not a deviation from one’s views on the state of Israel/Palestine to call for an immediate ceasefire. It is objectively necessary in order to begin addressing the suffering and damage inflicted upon Gaza. Only then, when bombs no longer rain from the sky and children no longer starve, will there be an opportunity to discuss moving forward. But right now, our minds must be critical and our mouths must call for an end to this heinous war.
