UMass Boston men’s soccer took on two teams two days apart on their home turf. The first was the Vermont State University of Castleton Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 26, which they tied 0-0, and the second was the Fitchburg State Falcons Tuesday, Oct. 29, which brought home a senior day 4-0 victory.
The entire match against the Castleton Spartans was a struggle to score; the Beacons stepped up their attacks and played more on the offensive front, with 33 shots on the goal and 18 being on target. Meanwhile, the Spartans were trying their best to protect their post from the Beacons’ merciless attacks.
Goalkeepers of both teams performed spectacularly as they held their respective forts down. It was more of a match between the keepers than the rest of the team.
The Beacons compensated for this tie when they took on the Fitchburg Falcons.
The first goal was netted by junior midfielder Elijah Elliot in the first half of the match. The Beacons annihilated the Falcons’ defense in the second half by netting three unanswered goals.
The audience experienced a Logan Erickson Potter goal, which came in the form of a header. The second goal was netted by senior forward Josh DeAlmeida, who was assisted by Jair Whyte. The last goal was netted by freshman forward Amir Lakhiky who was subbed in the 70th minute.
Erickson Potter shared his views on the match, saying, “The season is good. It kinda panned out the way we wanted, even though we had a slow start. We are just getting the results — today is a reflection of that.”
He added, “My personal goal is to preferably win the LEC title.”
Erickson Potter is not the only one who shares this goal. Even Head Coach Jake Beverlin is extremely happy with his team’s performance so far. He said, “I think we are the best team. We have already beat the top two teams, I would say fairly easily. So, I don’t see why we would not win the title.”
Transfer senior Corey Fincham shared how his season with the UMass Boston men’s soccer program proved to be a turning point. “I mean, it’s a pretty great program — the coaches, even the guys who are gonna stick around for next season, great environment and great atmosphere.”
Fincham added, “I definitely see them winning next year,” and hopes they will win this year as well.
