As the new year rolls in, so do new stressors — but plenty of exciting new films and TV shows do, too. Here’s a roundup of some of the biggest releases to expect in 2025.
This year is going to be a big one for superhero fans. Starting with a classic, Superman is making a return to theaters July 11 in the aptly-named “Superman.” Directed by James Gunn of “Guardians of the Galaxy” fame, the movie will star David Corenswet as Superman. This will be his biggest role by far after a career in smaller television roles and live theater.
In other DC Universe news, a second season of “Peacemaker” will premiere on Max in August 2025. This series is also directed by James Gunn, and John Cena will reprise his role as the main character. The second season will reportedly follow the events of “Superman,” connecting the story and characters.
Marvel fans have even more to look forward to in 2025. A fourth Captain America movie, “Captain America: Brave New World,” will be released on Valentine’s Day. It comes after the 2021 series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and will star Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America. Additionally, a new movie, “Thunderbolts*,” will combine characters from that series and other Marvel properties in a Suicide Squad-esque action-adventure. It will be in theaters May 2.
No film is more highly anticipated than “A Minecraft Movie.” Set to release April 4, nearly sixteen years after the game’s initial alpha release, the movie remains a mystery for the most part. While the cast and various clips showing off the graphics have been released, the main plot seems to be unknown.
Since the film’s very first teaser, fans have been on the edge of their seats, and it appears the movie will be just as financially successful — if not more so — than the 2023 “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie. With millions of people just waiting to watch the final product, there’s no question that “A Minecraft Movie” will be one of this year’s biggest films.
Disney is no stranger to releasing live-action remakes of their beloved animated films, and 2025 is no exception. Two of the most anticipated remakes are set to release this year; “Snow White” is expected March 21, and “Lilo and Stitch” is scheduled for May 23. Both have received mixed reactions from audiences, especially “Snow White” for the casting of Rachel Zegler. Still, make no mistake — these movies are projected to make several millions at the box office, as with any other live-action remake from Disney.
The hit DreamWorks Animation film “How to Train Your Dragon” is getting the same treatment, with a live-action remake coming out June 13. The plot isn’t fully known yet, but the film will focus on the relationship between the main character, Hiccup, and the dragon he befriends and names Toothless. The movie will be the first live-action film to ever come from DreamWorks Animation, and its reception will likely determine if the company will follow in this direction in the future.
There is plenty to look forward to in the world of television as well. For fans of “The Last of Us,” a second installment is set to release in April. After the monumental success of the first season, the series will now follow Part II of the original video game. It’s guaranteed to be action-packed, and fans of Pedro Pascal are sure to be ecstatic to watch him battle zombies once again with his character’s signature scowl.
Many of Netflix’s most beloved series are also making a return this year, including “Squid Game.” Although it hasn’t been long since the show released its second season, its popularity was bound to lead to another installment; however, it looks like this upcoming third season will be the last one. While official dates are unknown, leaks from Netflix’s Korean platform hint at the show continuing as early as this summer.
“Stranger Things” will finally be airing its final season sometime this year. It’s been a long journey to get to this point, with the show often having long gaps between seasons, but fans agree that it’s been worth it. While the kids are much more grown-up than they used to be, that doesn’t mean they still aren’t as lovable as they were when they first stumbled onto the set nine years ago. Whatever note the show ends on, it will likely be bittersweet.
When it comes to movies and TV, 2025 is set to be anything but boring. Everyone has something to look forward to, so be sure to stay tuned.
