As spring blooms at UMass Boston, it brings with it a variety of new outdoor sports. Lacrosse being among the apex of it. With the cold, dry weather coming to an end, the men’s lacrosse team is here to light a match of its own.
After a marvelous 2024 season, which started with a four-game winning streak for these players ended with an unfortunate Little East Conference playoff loss. Now, they are back with even more determination to win the title. Their statistics last season showcased a whopping 13 wins against just five losses out of the 18 games that they played.
When asked about their expectations for this season, sophomore star goalkeeper James Boldy responded, “our goal this year is to go out, win every game, win the LEC and make a good run at the tournament. Make it to the national championship.” He further added his personal goals for the season, “I am willing to do whatever it takes to help my team win. If I have to make 15-20 saves in a game in order to win, I will do it. Or make saves in key moments, then that’s what I have to do. I think we are looking really good this season; we have more depth all around. We are going to have a lot of guys rotating in and out, a lot of guys are going to get playing time. I think we are going to be a tough team to play this year.”
Boldy made a spectacular freshman debut last season and left his mark at the net. His save statistics speak for themselves, with 90 saves in his rookie year.
Adding to Boldy’s remarks, senior midfielder Shane McGonagle commented, “we want to win the national championship this season. I want to get back in the game and focus on getting better.” McGonagle, currently in a sling, is focusing his energy on getting back onto the field and reclaiming his position. He’s devoted to the sport and has high hopes in respect to the outcome of this season.
Graduate midfielder David Oman echoed his teammates goals for the year, “winning LEC championship, regular season championship and hopefully the National championship. Midfielder is a very taxing position to play, but with the help of your team you get back. I just want to be there for my team, help the team win and accomplish our goals.”
Oman is also currently trying his best to bounce back on the field and recover from his injury. Even with a sling, he is confident that the team is going to reach great heights. Last season was touch-and-go for the team, and they almost had the LEC championship bagged. This season, they are determined to win. The team has a lot of veterans who bring their own set of skills and a lot of new fresh talent that gels together really well.
Men’s lacrosse, in addition to a talented team, also has a strong coaching staff backing them up. Their head coach, Tyler Low, was also appointed as the assistant coach for the New York Atlas who are set to compete in the Premier Lacrosse League.
The Beacons have a very promising season ahead of them, and armed with utmost determination and skills they are ready to attack. The UMass Boston’s men’s lacrosse team is going to be a tough team to play this season as previously stated by Boldy. They are set to storm the field Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.
