Indie-rock musician Lucy Dacus released her fourth solo album, “Forever is a Feeling,” March 28. Most of the songs revolve around her relationship with her boygenius bandmate Julien Baker, and the classical sounds, harps and strings Dacus experiment with capture the feeling of falling in love.
Although Dacus has a successful solo career, she is also well known as one of the three members of indie-rock band boygenius. The band consists of Dacus, Baker and Phoebe Bridgers. When the band released their first album “the record” March 31, 2023, it brought a whole new fanbase to their music.
Recently, Dacus and Baker made their relationship public, and Dacus revealed just how many songs on the new album revolve around her love for Baker. Many have speculated that the two longtime friends were romantically involved since touring for boygenius.
With the rumors confirmed, Dacus was able to share this extremely vulnerable piece of art and share her feelings of love, loss and longing with the world.
This album is a masterclass on love songs. Whether it’s “Best Guess” or the titular “Forever is a Feeling,” Dacus captures the feeling of staying in love no matter what life throws at you. Her songs range from slow and thought-provoking to upbeat and lively, experimenting with new sounds and tempos.
Track 12, “Most Wanted Man,” builds tension leading up to the chorus, making it one of her more rhythmically intriguing tracks. The song is written about her relationship with Baker, showcasing lyrics like, “But I’m not going anywhere; least not anywhere you’re not.”
There’s an underlying sense of movement in the way the lyrics flow, with her vocals almost feeling displaced from the rhythm at times. This only enhances the listening experience, emphasizing her urgency to express each word. The rhythm is playful and fun, providing a perfect summer anthem for hopeless romantics.
Other songs on the album, like “Limerence,” are much slower and more vulnerable. Dacus’ vocals are more spoken than sung as she delivers lyrics like, “Is there a differеnce between lying to you / If it feels just as bad as telling thе truth?” Her words convey a sense of longing, fully captivated by someone who may not feel the same about you.
The instrumentals don’t quite build like other tracks on the album, but it remains consistently ambient and ethereal. The synth and piano continue to grow with the lyrics, creating a mesmerizing and emotional experience for the listener. Dacus’ voice is quiet and distant, almost as if she is recalling a memory that still looms over her.
While the majority of the album is just Dacus, sometimes with backing vocals, her one collaboration on the album is “Bullseye,” featuring Hozier. The lyrics, with their vocals blending seamlessly together, explore life after a breakup and the unraveling of young love. It captures the lingering reminders of someone lost — even when you know it was for the best. While the lyrics are extremely vulnerable, the rhythm remains slightly upbeat with guitar and drums, following the flow of their delivery.
The song feels like being struck in the heart, whether by tragic loss or a kind of inescapable bond. It is a track that will sit with you long after the final lyric, like the feeling of a perfect but fleeting moment in time.
One of Dacus’ more sensual tracks, “Ankles,” is an exploration of wanting something you can’t have. As the first single from the album, it carries an upbeat energy that rhythmically resembles “Hot and Heavy,” a track from her previous album “Home Video.” Dacus described the song as more lusty than she normally is, playing on the concept of sexual tension.
Dacus delivers lyrics like, “I want you to show me what you mean; then help me with thе crossword in the mornings,” showcasing the duality of wanting someone both physically and emotionally. The song is a perfect blend of vulnerability and sensuality, with a groovy rhythm that contrasts the yearning tone of the lyrics. It’s about playful frustration, desiring something just out of reach.
“Forever is a Feeling” offers a little something for everyone. Whether Dacus is navigating the complexities of love, longing or self-reflection, she delivers a collection that resonates on multiple levels. With its range of sound, it’s a versatile record that captures the full spectrum of human emotion, making it a must-listen for both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
