UMass Boston men’s lacrosse team went up against Plymouth State in a conference play March 28 and secured a 13-7 win. This was followed by a non-conference play against No. 20 Babson College April 1, which resulted in a 19-6 loss for the Beacons.
The first quarter of their game against the Panthers started out uncharacteristically slow for the Beacons, with only one goal by freshman Jack Schartner. Plymouth took advantage of the team’s slow offense in the early minutes of the second quarter and netted two consecutive goals in under a minute. The Beacons did not take this lead lightly, and graduate player Patrick Carey quickly scored an equalizer.
Both the teams traded goals throughout the second quarter. The Panthers cashed in a man-up opportunity, and the Beacons responded with a Matt Hutchings goal. Before the end of the quarter, Schartner leveled the field, bringing the Beacons to 5-5. The Panthers were quick to retaliate, and they ended the quarter with a 6-5 lead.
The second half saw the Beacons take the lead as Shane McGonagle stepped in. He successfully tied the game, then proceeded to net two more goals, giving UMass Boston an 8-6 lead over Plymouth. That was the first time during the match that the Beacons held the lead. Just five minutes remaining in the quarter, graduate player Sean Daly netted his first of the season, followed by another Hutchings score.
In the fourth quarter, Libby stepped in and scored his second of the afternoon. Daly followed, riding his momentum. The Panthers managed to sneak their last goal of the game past James Boldy. Tyler Hilgert scored the last goal of the game, securing the Beacons’ 13-7 win.
On Tuesday, UMass Boston entered the field against No. 20 Babson College. The Beavers put the Beacons in a predicament as they came out hard and strong, breaking through the Beacons’ offense. The first quarter was scoreless for the Beacons while the Beavers netted 4 goals. The second quarter saw a singular goal from Timothy Sullivan and Duncan Youngclaus by the very end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw a lot of back-and-forths between the Beacons and the Beavers. Sullivan successfully completed his hat trick, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure a win. Freshman Cole Allan netted a goal followed by Patrick Dwinnells and Ryan Steckman-Buck. The Beacons lost the match 19-6.
This was the second loss of the season for the team. The Beacons have not yet incurred any conference losses, but this loss was a wake-up call.
