Rain or shine, attendees in ponchos filled the grounds Saturday for the busiest day of the Boston Calling Music Festival. The event’s second day started off with leftover rain from the day before, but the worst was gone by 4 p.m.
Sofia Isella kicked off the afternoon with a beautiful performance on the Green Stage at 1:30 p.m. Srisley, a Korean pianist who recently graduated from Berklee College of Music, took over the Arena from 2-3:30 p.m. with her bandmates, Gudy Prada and Ludwig Izaguirre. She enlightened the crowd with her passion for Latin-American music, which showed in her band’s performance of “From Within” by Michel Camilo. The trio had a phenomenal harmony, all complimenting each other’s sound through the music.
By the time PINKLIDS went on at 2:55pm, most of the rain had cleared up and the band was ready to bring the heat at the Orange Stage. Equipped with a smoke machine and a thrilling stage energy, the set could even be enjoyed from down the path leading to the stage.
Sally’s Apizza hooked us up with blackened crust cheese pizza and basil burrata pizza. They also had Hot Honey chicken wings paired with peppercorn ranch. They were the perfect blend of sweet, peppery, with a proper kick — absolutely delicious and a great pick-me-up.
Later on, Somerville girl band “sidebody” rocked the Orange Stage with telephone themed costumes custom-made by a Massachusetts designer. Their rock music energized the crowd and set them apart from most in the current music scene. The band would frequently switch instruments, giving each song a unique sound. They ended the set by giving a “sidebody hotline” that fans could call and text with their craziest Boston stories.
All Time Low and Cage The Elephant played amazing back to back sets at the Green Stage. The crowds for both bands extended through the entire field with onlookers standing and sitting to watch the show, a view allowed by the giant screens of the stage. One attendee brought what appeared to be a large stalk of wheat, later proved to be a cattail, and waved it around during both sets.
For dinner, I enjoyed a lobster roll from New England Provisions. Having been on my festival bucket list, this roll was everything I could’ve hoped and more as I enjoyed it during Cage the Elephant’s set. Dessert was a tasty mini doughnut ice cream sundae from Blackbird Doughnuts. There were three mini donuts with soft serve ice cream piled on top and it was amazing.
Avril Lavigne took the Green Stage with dyed hair to match. Looking just as she did in her younger days, she played guitar and sang some of her biggest hits like “Girlfriend” and “Complicated.” Lavigne had the whole green singing along and rejoicing as she once again appeared at Boston Calling.
The Black Crowes also put on a great show at the Allianz Blue Stage starting at 7:45 p.m. Vocalist Chris Robinson was a delight to watch perform, bouncing across the stage and handling his mic stand as if it were weightless. The band released an album in 2024 after being broken up for over a decade.
The evening ended with an explosive performance from Grammy-nominated band Fall Out Boy, which used pyrotechnics and fireworks to light up the show. They marked each album era with onstage decor to match the theme, including a sheep with wings suspended from the air to celebrate their album “Infinity on High.”
