Men’s soccer took over the field against the State University of New York Oneonta Sept. 7 and Tufts University Sept. 10, losing both matches 0-2.
The team traveled to Medford to challenge the Jumbos Sept. 10, leading to a 0-2 loss for the Beacons.
The Jumbos gave the Beacons a run for their money as they exerted dominance in the first half, not just outscoring the Beacons but also outshooting them. The first half concluded with 2-0 lead for the opponents.
The second half saw a struggle as the team tried everything in an unsuccessful attempt to keep themselves afloat.
The Beacons got a feel for the Jumbos’ game after halftime, but even this was not enough for them to win the match. The Beacons’ meek offense was not able to break through the Jumbos’ iron-clad defense.
First-year goalkeeper Nolan McKenna was a force in the goal post. After the earlier deficit, none of the Jumbos’ attempts yielded them a goal. Meanwhile, sophomore Eduardo Chirico led the Beacons defense with seven shots on the goal.
Before this recent loss, they played against the State University of New York Oneonta, resulting in a 2-0 Mayor’s Cup finale loss for the team.
The Beacons fought hard throughout the match, creating opportunities to score. With four shots on goal, they were still unable to get past the Red Dragons’ defense. Oneonta scored in the 29th and 50th minute, giving the Beacons enough time to clap back, but all their efforts were in vain.
McKenna played the whole stretch with six saves against Oneonta’s eight shots on the goal, starting his debut year with a bang.
Three Beacons were acknowledged and named to the 2025 Mayor’s Cup All-Tournament Team. Junior back Ryan Doherty, junior midfielder Patrick Garcia and junior back Ian Visnick represented UMass Boston among the best players in their field.
The season started off slow for the team and it seems to be still going slow for them with two consecutive losses and ties at the start of the season.
The team is trying its hardest to get their season back on track with new opponents, new players and a much tougher crowd to face than last season. The Beacons have a habit of bouncing back stronger once they find their momentum. The season has just started, so they still have a long way to go.
