The Student Arts and Events Council hosted their “Lawn on B” party Oct. 2. Starting at 7 p.m., the night included beautiful lights, a glow in the dark swing set, a Caribbean food truck, games, a bounce house, student DJs and more.
The event was originally supposed to take place during the second week of the semester but was rescheduled due to the false reports of a shooting Sept. 11. After a mass police presence and investigations from law enforcement, all events and classes that day were canceled, including “Lawn on B.” The event finally took place Oct. 2, after a second rescheduling due to rain, and gave students a chance to let loose and have fun, celebrating the start of the semester.
Long lines formed on the Campus Center lawn from a Caribbean food truck that was serving free food to students. By showing their student ID, each guest could receive a ticket for a free plate of either honey chipotle or jerk chicken with a side of plantains, kale salad, red bean stew and green beans. Other giveaways included a ticket for free ice cream, and an SAEC raffle that offered students a chance to win $50.
“Lawn on B” was shining bright during the night with glow in the dark chairs, swing sets and seesaws. There was a wide variety of games on the lawn including mini golf, Connect 4 and foosball. An enclosed bounce house called the “Disco Dome” and a free photo booth for students to take pictures with their friends attracted crowds throughout the night.
The night also included music from two student DJs from UMass Boston’s Music Production Club, Daoism and Sheb Mansour. They played Y2K throwbacks like “Beauty and a Beat” by Justin Bieber ft. Nicki Minaj, “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” by Soulja Boy ft. Sammie and “Locked out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars.
SAEC hosted a game where students had to dance while the music was playing, but whenever the DJ stopped the song they had to freeze. If anyone kept moving after the song stopped, they would be eliminated, and the last one standing would win the game. With many students dancing and participating they decided to play two rounds, leaving two participants who each won a $50 Amazon gift card.
