A perfect 4-0 start to the season for women’s basketball after they took down Vermont State University Johnson by a score of 73-49 on the road this past Sunday. It was the Beacons’ fourth straight 20 point win, and the program’s first 4-0 start since 2019.
Hialeah Turner-Foster led the way for the Beacons with 16 points on 8-15 shooting in 28 minutes — her highest scoring game of the year. Turner-Foster is UMass Boston’s fourth player to lead or be tied for the Beacons’ lead in points this season.
They received contributions from a blend of players from both the starters and bench units in each game. Their roster is talented at the top, but what’s been incredibly noticeable is their depth. Turner-Foster and Madison Haggett — two junior guards — have been prime examples of that. They’re second and third in scoring for UMass Boston, and both have just over 10 points per game.
Leading the way this season, for the second year in a row, is junior Sabanna Berrios. She’s scoring 14.5 points per game, a career high for Berrios, all while shooting 57% percent from the field — good for second in the Little East Conference.
Berrios has been their star, and the team has followed suit with her efficiency. They lead the LEC as a team in field goal percentage and are second from deep. Another big part of their game has been the three ball: Haggett leads the conference in threes per game and is top three in three point percentage, while her teammate Kaydie Sturm is atop the list shooting 50% from deep.
The Beacons can score at every level offensively and can still rely on their tough defense. UMass Boston gets in passing lanes and are very active inside and out — after all, they’re among the LEC leaders in both blocks and steals.
There’s a lot to like in a lot of places; however, they’ve yet to face any sort of adversity early on this season. They’ve shot out of a cannon, but this Wednesday, UMass Boston will face an LEC opponent when they host the University of Southern Maine. The Huskies are undefeated as well at 3-0 — 18 points has been their lowest margin of victory. Southern Maine ended UMass Boston’s season last year in the first round of the LEC tournament.
