UMass Boston’s men’s hockey team set the rink ablaze with a 7-1 offensive win against the Roger Williams University Swoops Dec. 6.

The Beacons were prepared for a win as soon as they stepped on the ice, with sophomore Chris Merryman opening the game in the 12th minute. This set the scene for junior Jakub Teply in the 13th minute, bringing the Beacons to a 2-0 lead over the Swoops. The first period concluded with a 3-0 lead for the Beacons as Chris Repmann netted his own goal in the 17th minute, extending the team’s lead.

Echoing the first period, the second also started with a goal, with junior Jack Mortson successfully sneaking the puck past the Roger Williams goalkeeper and scoring in the 10th minute. That was the only goal scored in the second perio, which ended with a 4-0 Beacons lead.

The third period opened with two consecutive goals from Repmann in the second and sixth minute. Just five minutes later, sophomore Michael Lynch scored again in the 11th minute, bringing the Beacons to a whopping 7-0 lead.

Then, the Swoops finally retaliated with their first — and last — goal of the game in the third period. With Beacons goalkeeper Connor McDonnough being an absolute force in the net, he played for 60 minutes and let only one goal through. McDonnough was the Beacons’ only line of defense throughout the game, and he carried it well, keeping out the Swoops the best as he could.

The Beacons have seen a lot of improvement throughout the season, and this kind of offensively dominant win is exactly what the team needed.

Junior Jack Mortson was recently named Little East Conference player of the week for his outstanding performance at the thanksgiving showcase in Utica. Mortson has been the backbone of the Beacons’ offense — he has scored at least one goal almost every game that the team has played.

The Beacons are ending 2025 with a statement win for the team. This was the most goals that the team has scored in a single game since the season started. The Beacons are working hard towards a common goal. The team still has a very long way to go as they gear up for the 58th annual Codfish Bowl soon after the new year.

This means the Beacons are going to be working overtime, powering through the holidays preparing for their first Codfish Bowl match-up against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at home on Jan 2nd, 1pm.

The Beacons have improved their offensive lack from last season and are opening more and more games this season. The new year brings the team much more opportunities and new opponents to face.

Last season, the team concluded the Codfish Bowl with a win and a loss at the championship game, which has been a pattern for the team over the last two season. It’s time to see if the Beacons are able to break their pattern and bring the championship home.
