UMass Boston’s men’s hockey team was on a roll with their three-game winning streak at home until they fell to Babson College for the second time this season. The team headed to Babson Feb. 13, but found only a 2-1 loss. This was followed by another 4-3 loss on the road against the Southern Maine Huskies Feb. 14.
The Beacons opened strong against Babson when sophomore Michael Lynch netted a goal. Unfortunately, that was their first and last goal of the game.
The Beavers were quick to retaliate, and they tied the game within minutes and then added one, securing a 2-1 lead over the Beacons. The team tried their level best to bridge the gap but were unable to break through the opponent’s strong defense.
The next two periods were scoreless for both the Beacons and the Beavers, even though both the teams scrambled for more goals. The defense made up for the lack of offensive showcase against Babson. This resulted in a 2-1 Beavers win.
The next day, UMass Boston opened their game against Southern Maine with a goal from freshman defenseman Rhett Kodsi. The Huskies were quick to retaliate, and the first period concluded with a 1-1 draw.
The second period saw a standalone goal from the Huskies even though the Beacons tried their best to gain advantage over their seasoned opponent.
The Beacons finally struck in the third period as junior Jakub Teply found the back of the net with help from seniors Jude Kurtas and Steven Spetz. The opponent then netted their own goal, extending their lead to 3-2 within seven minutes. Soon, the Huskies scored again.
With less than 13 seconds left in the game, Lynch proved to be the team’s guardian angel as he netted his second goal of the weekend assisted by junior Chris Repmann and freshman Kyle Isenberg. This still wasn’t enough for the Beacons to win or go into overtime, and the night concluded with a 4-3 Southern Maine University win.
Even though the game did not go as planned, the Beacons still outshot the Huskies offensively with 50 shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Connor McDonnough was an absolute beast in the goal post as he made 30 saves for UMass Boston.
After a three-game winning streak and the Beacons dominating their opponents both offensively and defensively these weekend conference losses came as a blow. As the team wraps their 2025-26 season up, they are all set to enter the last few final matches of the Little East Conference, which will determine the course of their season.
