What’s to come in UMass Boston sports

Warmer weather is coming and it’s almost time for the seasons to turn, so it’s a good time to look at what’s to come for UMass Boston sports.

Baseball had their first couple of games postponed due to snow on the field, but are still scheduled to begin their season hosting MIT March 3. They finished fourth in the latest edition of the Little East Conference’s preseason coaches poll. A season ago, the Beacons finished 25-17, and were defeated by Eastern Connecticut State in the LEC tournament.

Coming off their 2025 LEC Championship, UMass Boston softball is set to begin their 2026 campaign on March 7 at Bentley University against MIT. They’ll get one tune-up game before heading to Melbourne, Florida for the Space Coast Spring Break. The Beacons will play eight games on their trip until they ship back to Boston to play at Emmanuel College on March 26. Their overall record in last year was 33-13-1.

Men’s lacrosse kicked off their season with a 15-11 win Friday over the University of New England. They’ll play again on the road March 3 until they come back for their home opener March 7 against Nichols College. The Beacons lost in the LEC Championship game a year ago to Western Connecticut State after going 14-5 on the season.

Women’s lacrosse dropped their season opener to Husson University Saturday, losing 10-8, but will have a chance to bounce back at Emerson College March 4. This is only the third season of women’s lacrosse at UMass Boston since they began in 2024, winning just one game but following it up with an improved 6-10 season in 2025.

Men’s tennis will open the second part of their season March 7 at the University of Hartford. The Beacons fell in the LEC semi-finals to Bridgwater State University last year.

While both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have been eliminated in the LEC tournament’s first round, both hockey teams managed to advance at least one round. Men’s hockey narrowly beat the University of Southern Maine 3-2 on Feb 25 in the first round only to be wiped out by the conference’s number one seed, Norwich University, 6-0 in the semi-finals Saturday.

UMass Boston women’s hockey is still alive as of March 2 after their 2-1 win over Southern Maine in the LEC semifinals, and they’ll travel to Norwich University for the LEC Championship March 7. Norwich, like their counterparts in the men’s bracket, is first seed.

There’s plenty of excitement to come in the spring season, and a hopeful playoff push for women’s hockey, seeking the title in the first ever season of hockey in the LEC.
