Boston has welcomed fans from all across the world as the 2026 FIFA World Cup arrives in North America, and many students may assume that expensive match tickets are the only way to experience the tournament. Fortunately, the FIFA Fan Festival at City Hall Plaza will be offering a free alternative to bring the World Cup’s excitement to the city.
Until June 27, City Hall Plaza will be transformed into a gathering space where fans can watch live matches, enjoy entertainment, and connect with communities across the region. Coinciding with Boston’s role as a host city for seven World Cup matches, this will be one of the city’s largest international events.
A rare opportunity presents itself for UMass Boston Students as the financial barriers to attending the games in person may be lifted. While a ticket to a match can cost hundreds to even thousands of dollars, making them out of reach for many students, the Fan Festival is free and open to the public.
The Festival will feature giant screens broadcasting matches from across the tournament, food vendors, live entertainment, and interactive activities. “A community-centered celebration designed to bring together soccer fans, residents, and visitors regardless of whether they hold tickets to matches,” as described by organizers.
The festival’s downtown Boston location also makes it easy for UMass Boston students to attend. Public transportation connects the campus to the Government Center, allowing students to travel to and from the event without a car. The central setting may encourage students to go with friends, explore the city, and participate in programming throughout the tournament.
The FIFA Fan Festival promises to bring the energy of the world’s biggest sporting event to downtown Boston. For UMass Boston students eager to share in the World Cup experience, City Hall Plaza may be the next best thing to being in the stadium.
