Volleyball
9-3 (0-0 LEC)
The Beacons started off the season uncharacteristically slowly–they lost their first two matches of the year–but were able to bounce back quickly and now look poised to have another monster year. They began the campaign with a doubleheader on August 30 at the Haverford College Invitational in Pennsylvania. They were downed by Susquehanna, 3-1, in the opener and lost to the host school later that day, 3-0. The next day, they defeated Widener, 3-0, and lost to Stevenson by the same score. After returning to the peninsula to regroup, the Beacons ventured out to Beverly, MA, for four matches at the Endicott Invitational. They won a close match, 3-2, against SUNY Canton–a tall task considering they dropped their opening set and had to win three of the next four–and then swept Babson, 3-0, giving Coach Terry Condon her 200th career win in the process. They swept both of their matches the next day to head back to the Clark Center with a perfect record for the tournament. The ladies closed out this stretch with a nearly flawless performance at the first ever UMass Boston Invitational on the 12th and 13th. They swept their four matches, with defeats of Salisbury University, Williams College, Middlebury, and Whitman College. They’ll see their next action on Sept. 17 at Salve Regina.
Men’s Soccer
2-3 (0-0 LEC)
The Beacons opened up their year in Bristol, Rhode Island, for the Roger Williams University/ Squad Locker Classic. They began on August 30 with a very hard fought 2-1 loss at the hands of RPI. The Beacons got off to an early 1-0 lead when Elton Texeira put in a goal off of a deflected shot, but they surrendered two goals in seven minutes late in the second half and did not recover. They won a high scoring affair the next day against Thomas College, 4-3, before returning to Boston for a few days off. On Sept. 3, the Beacons were downed by Tufts, 8-0, before coming back six days later with a strong performance at Gordon College. After surrendering an early 1-0 lead, the Beacons tied the match up with less than five minutes remaining via an Edmilson Barros goal, but they were defeated in OT, 2-1, after giving up a penalty kick goal. After returning home, the Beacons closed out the most recent stretch with a trip to Fitchburg State. The guys struck early, with a goal from Barros in the seventh minute, before allowing Fitchburg to tie in the last ten minutes of regulation. In the 108th minute, Pedro Dasilva won the match for the Beacons with a goal as the second and final OT was winding down. Next up for the boys is a home date with Salem State on Sept. 17.
Women’s Soccer
1-1-2 (0-0 LEC)
The Beacons opened their campaign on August 29 at Babson College, where they battled to a 0-0 draw. Kristen Spain had seven saves as neither team could find the back of the net, even after two OT periods. The following Wednesday, they earned their first win of the year, a 1-0 defeat of Wesleyan University on the Clark Center field. Krista Ledin scored the lone goal for the Beacons early in the second half and–coupled with three saves from Spain, that was all they’d need. Following a 2-1 loss to Wilkes University at the Union Women’s Soccer Invitational in Schnectady, NY (Hannah Petersen scored the goal for the Beacons), the ladies finished out the stretch with a 2-2 tie against the University of Rochester. After scoring twice in the first half, the Beacons surrendered two goals in a three minute span in the early part of the second half, and could not break through for the remainder of regulation time or in two OT periods. Next up is a trip to Colby-Sawyer on Sept. 17.
Women’s Tennis
0-2 (0-0 LEC)
It’s been a rough start to the year for the Beacons. They opened up at home against Mount Holyoke, and were blanked, 9-0. On September 10, they matched up against Johnson & Wales at home, and lost 8-1. Kristy Garcia got the lone win for the Beacons. They’ll be in action next on Sept. 18, at Eastern Nazarene.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
The Beacons made their debut at the Roger Williams University Invitational on Sept. 6. They placed ninth out of ten teams. Also finishing strongly was men’s runner Tad Delaney, who finished 36th at 19:06.47. The teams will next compete on Sept. 20, at the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs Invitational.
