The men and women’s Beacons Hockey teams are working with Community Servings and selling pies every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. until Nov. 17th. They are alternating between the Campus Center, outside of the cafeteria and the second floor of McCormack Hall selling apple, sweet potato, pecan and pumpkin pies from several restaurants and bakeries in town. Community Servings is a charity that delivers food to homebound people with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. The pies cost $25 each, enough for the charity to feed one person for a week.
Undergraduate Student Senate president Michael Metzger announced, in an Oct. 22nd e-mail, the addition of the Senate By-laws and Policies Revision Committee. The committee, composed of Senators Michael Herbert, Juana Matias, Muna Kangsen and Henry Nsang, will form recommendations to the by-laws and internal policies of the Senate. They will report their progress on Dec. 13th, with the final recommendations announced March 14th, 2007.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate John Hume spoke at UMB’s Quinn Administration Building October 25 about the peace process and conflict resolutions in Northern Ireland. A crowd of over seventy people attended the speech, sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies. As founder and leader of Northern Ireland’s Social Democratic and Labour Party, Hume brokered peace between Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s IRA-backed Sinn Fein. As such, the Nobel Committee awarded both Hume and fellow Northern Irish politician David Trimble the Peace Prize in 1998.
A book launch for University of Massachusetts’ Press newly released Sticks & Stones: Living With Uncertain Wars, will be held today at 4pm in the Quinn Building’s Chancellor’s Conference Room. The book will be introduced by its editors, including UMB’s John Joseph Moakley Chair for Peace and Relations, Padraig O’Malley, Paul Atwood of the Joyner Center, and McCormack Graduate School Professor Patricia Peterson. Sticks & Stones is a collaboration of essays discussing the legacy of war in modern times.
