On April 5, the Red Sox took on the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was pretty cold considering it was only 40 degrees, but honestly, being at a Red Sox game is worth bearing the cold.
When at Fenway, Mass Media learned about the Student 9s program that the Red Sox currently offer to high school and college students. If you are a student, you can attend a Red Sox game for only $9! That’s a pretty great deal. All you have to do is text the number 23215 and write “students.” That number will message back informing you when there are openings to come to a game, and you can purchase tickets through the MLB Ballpark app. I mean, $9 is cheaper than going to a bowling alley or going to a movie. Come and gather your friends, cause it is baseball season! A Red Sox game is where you spend time with family and friends during the warm Summer months. You can watch the game, dance to each player’s walk up song and then get yourself some fried dough or a Fenway frank.
Fenway Park is America’s most beloved baseball park, so it’s definitely worth it to go check it out on a Friday night when you do not have anything to do. $9 is not a bad deal considering that some Red Sox games can cost over $20 depending on the game. We all know that college students are on a tight budget, so this is a great opportunity for us all.
At this game, it was also Cy Young winner Rick Porcello bobble head night. That’s another cool thing about going to Sox games. Sometimes you get free memorabilia! On April 14, it is Mookie Betts bobble head night. The Red Sox also holds specifically themed nights for college students.
Now, back to the Sox game. We saw lefty Chris Sale’s first time pitching for the Sox. He pitched seven innings, seven strikeouts, one walk, and gave up three hits while giving up zero runs, throwing 104 pitches. His pitches ranged from 92-94 miles an hour on his fastball, which he used to his favor all night long.
The game lasted four hours. Both teams were scoreless and the game was a nail biter. In the bottom of the twelfth inning, Sandy Leon (catcher for the Sox) hit a walk-off three-run home run.
The Red Sox also made history last night. The last time they had a 3-0 walk off win was on July 15, 1971 against the Minnesota Twins. This was also Leon’s first walk off hit in his career. The Red Sox defense did well considering that the Pirates were unable to get any runs, despite a ninth inning error by Pablo Sandoval. The offense was something that was lacking last night, which is something to be aware of going forward, although it is only game 2 of 162
The Sox will look to keep up their winning ways, and certainly have a roster that can keep the winning going deep into October. So if you have the time, why don’t you go check out a game? It’s only $9!
