Seriously, what is going on with the Celtics? One minute they cannot buy a win and Jaylen Brown is calling the atmosphere on the team, “toxic.” The next minute, they are beating the Golden State Warriors by 33 points and turning that momentum into a three-game winning streak on a west coast trip. Then, right when everything seemed to be all fine and dandy, they allow 140 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers! So, what is going on with the team in green?

Despite the embarrassing loss to the Clippers, the team insists that everything is fine, and they sorted out whatever issues they were having prior to their trip out west. So, what happened during this trip?

Here’s what Al Horford told NBC Sports Boston after their Friday practice about what happened on the flight out west: “Kyrie was instrumental because he was the one that initiated everything as far as being like, ‘Hey, let’s have conversations, let’s play cards, let’s do this, let’s do that’ on this plane ride.”

So, you’re telling me the guy who seemed to be the center of all the Celtics prior issues, was actually the solution this time around? Kyrie even took it another step further just two days ago by apologizing for his prior handling of the media. So, is this the attitude we will be getting from Irving from now on? or will he revert to his old ways the next time the Celtics have to face any sort of adversity?

Aside from all of that, the Celtics have been playing more unselfish basketball lately and it has led to a few good wins. One of the biggest keys to the Celtics recent resurgence has been Gordon Hayward.

Yes, I know we have been there several times this season; it seems every time Hayward has a 30-point game we are talking about how he is back to being his old self again, but it always seems to be a fluke. However, this time might be different; even though he still may not be 100%, he might be hovering around 80%. In the past four games Hayward has averaged 16.25 points per game while also winning a game with a buzzer beater in Sacramento.

This is about the time in the season where us fans would hope the Celtics would get back to being what they were supposed to be all along. Boston currently sits in fifth place in the eastern conference but is only two games out of third place. As we saw last year so often with these Celtics, home court advantage will be vital if they plan on winning playoff games.

Last year, the Celtics only won one game away from home in the playoffs. So, if the Celtics plan on making it to the finals like so many expected them to in the beginning of the season, they are going to have to learn how to win big games in hostile territory. This is not something you can just flip a switch and do when the playoffs start. 

The Celtics need to start to turn around their season right now and head into the playoffs with some momentum and on a hot streak. If they do not, then you can kiss the 2018–2019 season, and maybe even Kyrie Irving, goodbye.
