It has been an eventful past two weeks for UMass Boston, as they have worked hard to bring back sports for the spring semester. This past week, all of our spring sports teams competed as the sports season began to ramp up. Here is how our spring sports teams are doing thus far.
Men’s Baseball
The UMass Boston men’s baseball team has been off to a relatively shaky start, opening the season with a 2–2 record. In their most recent game, the Beacons lost to Rhode Island College by a score of 10–2. The Beacons haven’t looked quite the same since their 2019 conference title, as their two wins of the season were achieved by just one run against Castleton University on two separate occasions. This weekend, the Beacons will have to prove themselves against UMass Dartmouth, as they have a double-header on Saturday, April 24. UMass Dartmouth has a losing record in the conference, so UMass Boston has a prime opportunity to get their game back on track with a couple wins.
Women’s Softball
The UMass Boston women’s softball team hasn’t completely kicked off their season, as they have only played two games thus far and have a 1–1 record in those two games. However, their schedule gets very hefty beginning April 22, when they have a double-header against Western Connecticut State University. The women’s softball team will have to play six games in six days due to a series of double headers starting today and going into next week. It’s safe to say that next week will be a test of grit and resilience for the Beacons.
Men’s Lacrosse
The men’s lacrosse team has been nothing short of dominant so far this season, outscoring their opponents by a total of 36 goals through their first three games. This past week, UMass Boston played against Eastern Connecticut State University. The Beacons came out victorious, maintaining their undefeated record in a tightly contested 10–8 game. The Beacon’s schedule will continue to get a bit more fast paced as they have four games in the next eight days (as of April 22). Based on the way UMass Boston has been playing, they have shown that it is going to take a monumental effort to take them down. I wouldn’t be surprised if we could be looking at a potential undefeated season for the UMass Boston men’s lacrosse team.
Things are just about to get interesting now that each of the spring sports teams have gotten a few games under their belt. With UMass Boston entering the season later than most other teams, it is important to remember that they need to take advantage of every game they play because they have less opportunities to compete for a conference championship.
Just as quick as the season is starting for UMass Boston, the season is going to be coming to an end, as there is less than a month until the end of the regular season. The Beacons need to make sure they find success in these games against their conference to ensure that they will be one of the teams playing beyond just the beginning of May.
