Looking to take a break from studying and visit one of the hidden gems of the Campus Center? Head to the Game Room, located on the upper level of the Campus Center, in the corner behind the One Stop. The Game Room has been open to students since 2004, offering different types of activities to allow you to have fun at school. Because of its exclusive location, being tucked out of sight to many, the Game Room might not be common knowledge to everyone.
When it was just starting out, the Game Room only had a few pool tables. As the years went on, and technology became more relevant, gaming consoles and TVs were installed. Currently, in addition to pool tables, the Game Room offers consoles, including Wii, PlayStation Four, and Xbox One. Feeling a bit old-fashioned? Play a board game or even Yu-Gi-Oh! The Game Room even has Monopoly, Operation, and Hangman as well.
Plus, to add to the scenery, the room hosts artwork, submitted by students, for everyone to observe. On top of the noise of the video games, you will find music in the background, to keep an upbeat vibe.
You can come to the game room essentially everyday of the week, with the exception of Sundays. The hours of operation are:
Monday through Thursday: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This room also allows students to rent out the space for student organizations who wish to use it. If a request is made to accommodate an event, the game room will close early, usually between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, to help accommodate the members running the event.
After surveying a few students who were in the game room, the overall result showed that many students felt that, “it’s a great place to take a break from our studies.” Another student also commented on the variety of activities that the Game Room offers.
The goal of the Game Room is to help build a community environment at the university, as well as offer students a safe place to hang out. The Game Room is open to undergraduate and graduate students; however, it is usually occupied by a heavy undergraduate population. Jose Reyes, the Assistant Director for Campus Center Operations, who oversees the Game Room, hopes to promote the Game Room to have graduate students take advantage of the resources equally as much as the undergraduate students do.
