Taylor Swift. There is arguably no hotter act in the world right now than the 21 year old country superstar. Taylor brought her elaborate and well-rehearsed “Speak Now World Tour” to Gillette Stadium for a sold out 2 night run on June 25th and 26th and needless to say her loyal New England fans where excited. The hype even 4 hours before the show was palpable in the parking lots, and by the time Taylor went on at 8:50 (already past most of her fans’ bedtimes) the stadium was bursting with anticipation. The stage was more house-like than anything else. It featured two levels with an elaborate staircase and a T-shaped catwalk that extended far out into to on field crowd. The show began with a prerecorded video on the screen before Taylor came up through the bottom of the catwalk and began with “Sparks Fly”. All 53,000 fans in attendance screamed with delight as the star began her trip around the different spots on the catwalk, a process she would repeat throughout the night. After the opening track, Taylor strapped on a guitar and played the smash hit “Mine”, which had the whole crowd singing their hearts out. After “Mine” Taylor took a few minutes to talk to the crowd, stating that they were her “closest friends” and that they had “outdone themselves”. The show had a really fun, carefree feel to it and there was never an awkward moment. The sound was flawless and the intermissions for instruments or costume switching were filled by mini skits involving dancers or actors. A highlight from the night was when Taylor made her way through the crowd to a tree that had been constructed at the back of the field seating. She played a short acoustic set consisting of “Fearless”, which she played ukulele on, and “Last Kiss”. After one acoustic verse of her signature hit “You Belong With Me” she made her way back through the crowd to finish the song up electrically and start winding down the main set. “Dear John” was the best track of the night. The crowd was swaying back in forth in unison for the choruses that were punctuated by an elaborate fireworks display. Swift appeared especially emotional after the tune, and she took a moment to collect herself before going for a wardrobe change. Swift finished her main set with a vivid rendition of “Long Live”, which, in a touching move, was dedicated to her fans. It seemed as though at many points over the course at the show that Taylor would break down on stage, and although she never fully did, the emotion in the stadium was blatant. She has a way of pulling every fan in, no matter where they are seated and make them feel as though their support genuinely matters to her, and that sort of energy made for a very special evening. For a crowd whom the majority of had never been to a concert, a surprising number of fans stayed for the encore. Taylor rose up through the stage on a giant sofa to perform the touching acoustic number “Fifteen”, a heartwarming tale about growing up. Her band joined her for the second verse and the crowd (as usual) were belting out the lyrics as if they had rehearsed with her. The final track of the evening was “Love Story”, the song that famously took “Romeo and Juliet” into the 21st century. Needless to say a good percentage of the crowd was in tears for the track. A balcony attached to a zip line took Taylor around the stadium for the duration of the song and the flash bulbs erupting rivaled the kickoff of the Super Bowl. When the song was over she received her biggest ovation of the night and it appeared as though fans would never leave their seats – they didn’t want to give up the moment they were in. That is the biggest compliment an artist can receive. Swift created a moment so savory that her fans were refusing to let it go, and when she comes back to the stadium you can bet that ticket prices will still be astronomical, kids will be begging their fathers 6 months in advance, and above all, you will get an unforgettable night and a kick-ass concert.
