I was really struck by this article, having had the same experience and the same reaction. I really thought I would be able to find at least one lit course on Latin American writers, but found nothing even vaguely resembling such a course. I am taking a lit course this semester in which I feel the professor has really tried to represent a variety of literature from other countires, but it has only managed to whet my appetite for more. How is it that authors like Salman Rushdie, Octavio paz, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and even Canadian authors like Margaret Atwood, fail to be significantly represented at a university which prides itself on its diversity? There’s a world out there, and I want to read about it! American grill is fine but I don’t want to dine on it every night; how about something with salsa, or curry, or a touch of saffron?
