The UMass Boston Women’s softball team could not win their second in a row as they lose a close one to UMass Dartmouth by the final count of 7-6. Cheryl Boltruczyk got the go ahead for UMass Dartmouth.
UMass Boston scored early on a two run blast by first baseman Siobhan Lynch in the first inning. This was her team high, sixth homerun of the season, and she is batting (.417) through eleven games. The Beacons would score four more runs for the entire game.
Pitcher Andrea Spinale contributed scoring two runs on three hits in four at bats. Second baseman Stephanie Poulos and Siobhan Lynch each had two hits of their own. The team had a total of nine hits in thirty two at bats, scoring six runs.
UMass Dartmouth had no problem scoring themselves, as a big three run eighth inning put them ahead for good. Center fielder Melissa Tavares led the way scoring two runs on two hits in three at bats. Left fielder Tracey Penney contributed as well scoring a run and batting in two more on her two hits. The team had a total of ten hits in thirty-two at bats, scoring seven runs. This marked their first victory of the season improving their record to 1-11, 1-2 in conference play.
After some lousy weather kept the team off the diamond for almost a week and a half, the Lady Beacons avenged their loss on the road to the Lady Corsairs by winning a nail biter at home on last Sunday (April 13), securing their first conference win of the season. The Lady Beacons’ record stands at 4-8 on the season and 1-3 in the Little East Conference.
