The UMass Boston women’s softball team played at home against Salem State College in their second home game of the season. Stephanie Poulos started on the mound for the Beacons, as did Michele Bruno for Salem State.
The Lady Beacons got off to a quick start sparked by a two run single in the first inning by first baseman Siobhan Lynch. Salem State responded in the third, bringing in two runs of their own on hits by left fielder Bonnie Kilpatrick and center fielder Kelli Driscoll.
The Lady Beacons responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. The inning started with a double by shortstop Kristen Bowes and continued with singles by center fielder Stacey Peterson and third baseman Kristen Smoyer. UMass scored another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth on hits by Christine Allen and Siobhan Lynch. They would score a final run in the sixth as Kristen Smoyer reached the bag on an error by Salem State left fielder Bonnie Kilpatrick.
Salem State Pitcher’s Michele Bruno and Carleen Wastaferro gave up a combined 10 runs on 10 hits striking out only three batters for the game. Stephanie Poulos pitched the entire game for the Beacons. She allowed only five runs on 12 hits striking out four in the process. With this game, her record improves to 3-2 on the season.
UMass would have no problem getting the victory as they won the game by the score of 10-5. With the win, the Beacons captured their first home victory thus far. The Beacons lost the next day on the road to Little East rival UMass Dartmouth 7-6. The Lady Beacons next play on Friday April 11 for a doubleheader against Newbury College.
