A couple days ago I had the misfortune of sitting in a class where a student, who was obviously bored with the lecture, decided to use his cell phone as a video game console and/or “text-message” his friends for nearly a half hour.
Not only is this inappropriate behavior but it is also disruptive to the class. I did not locate any policy guidelines in the Student Handbook about this annoying and bothersome habit. This needs to stop.
What can the faculty do? Perhaps a verbal warning would suffice for a first time offense. A second offense: asked to leave class, marked absent from class, incur a $50 fine, and/or asked to attend a mandatory workshop. A third offense: asked to leave class, be marked as absent, incur a $100 fine, and await a peer review group by the Student Government Association (SGA) and/or await judiciary proceeding from the Office of Student Affairs.
What are your thoughts?
