For those of you that will hang around UMB during the long hot months, here are some activities that you can participate in if you’re looking for something fun to do:
The NBA Pro Summer League. One of the more presitigous and well-organized events on campus. Ten NBA teams, including the Boston Celtics will tip-off in a showcase of top rookie talent and free agents trying to impress their respective coaching staff enough to make next year’s rosters. Tickets are available at the Boston Celtics ticket office and for members of the UMB community, there is a limited opportunity to pick up free tickets at the Office of Student Life, located on the fourth floor of the Wheatley building. Tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis. Stay tuned for more details.
Bay State Games: Watch the stars of tomorrow today as some of the best amateur athletes in Massachusetts compete in over a dozen sports right here at UMB. All events are free of charge. Sports include basketball, swimming, softball, lacrosse, tennis, and track and field. It’s a wonderful and refreshing chance to watch athletes who just love to play sports without the whining, ludicrous money, or scandals that fill the evening news.
Sailing at UMB: Learn to sail on the briny deep, i.e. Dorchester Bay. This wonderful UMB program allows UMB students and Community Membership holders to learn how to operate a 12-foot long sailboat free of charge. Lessons are an hour long and are held 12-5pm Tuesday through Saturday. Contact sailmaster Tom Walsh in Marine Operations for more information
UMB Golf Classic: Although obviously not held on campus, this annual event is always a smashing success as a motley collection of UMB faculty, staff, and student-athletes tee off at the Franklin Park Golf course. There is an entrance fee of $110 for individuals ($400 for a foursome who register together) but all proceeds go to help support the UMB Athletic department. So all you Tiger Woods wanna-bes, this is your chance to swing away and help out student-athletes at the same time.
There are many other activities one can pursue here during the summer, such as dancing and splashing to music in Water Aerobics, pumping iron at the Beacon Fitness Center, or playing some tennis on the multi-court complex behind the Science building. Whatever your physical activity or hobby may be, UMB can likely provide a cheap and fun-filled opportunity to do so.
