With seven matches left to play in their 2003 season, the UMass Boston women’s tennis team has put together three more wins than in all of their 2002 season. After their dominating win over Wentworth Institute of Technology on October 2, the Beacons were one match short of .500, at 4-5. In this win the Beacons comprised five wins in singles play, led by Denise Ridge’s first singles win over Dunja Vujunic of Wentworth, 6-3,6-2. Also winning singles play for UMass were Chrissy Coolidge 6-3, 6-4, Cindy Wong 6-2,5-7,7-4, Chidinma Okeblama 5-7, 6-2, 7-1, and Victoria Romero , victorious 6-0, 6-3, in this chilly early fall match. Despite her gallant effort, Cindy Wilson fell to her Wentworth opponent at the sixth singles spot. Doubles play was cancelled due to the rain that made the court too slippery to continue.
On Saturday, October 4 the Beacons traveled to Plymouth State for a Little East Conference match. The Panthers pounced on the Beacons 5-1, which left the Beacons 4-6 overall on the season. Nevertheless, the future is looking much brighter for the Beacons, who finished the 2002 season at 1-11 overall. The Beacons will travel to Salem State today to battle; they will be back at Clark Athletic Center on Saturday, October 9 at 3 p.m. for a conference match versus Rhode Island College. The Anchorwomen are sure to be a tough opponent, as they are 7-3 overall this season and undefeated in the LEC, at 3-0. Go Beacons!
