UMass Boston baseball looked to keep pace in a top-heavy Little East Conference. Currently in the rut of it all with the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors and the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth, they began this stint with a doubleheader against the Southern Maine Huskies Sunday, April 7 (1).
Grad student right-hander Max Moss started on the mound for the Beacons against Clay Robbins of the Huskies. The Beacons opened the scoring column in the bottom of the first with Aidan Blake’s sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in senior Bostyn Burris for the first run of the game.
The next five innings were scoreless until junior Mariano Jimenez’s blast put the Beacons on top 4–0 in the bottom of the sixth. Southern Maine would bounce back in the top of the seventh, tying the game at four-all. In the bottom of the inning, the game-winning run came off another RBI from Blake, bringing home sophomore Justin Gouveia, as UMass Boston would close out game one 5–4, per Beacons Athletics (2).
The Beacons suited up for game two at 5 p.m. that evening. Senior Dillon Ryan started on the mound for UMass Boston against Owen Sullivan for Southern Maine. Ryan improved to 3–0 on the year, only allowing three runs off of four hits in three innings. UMass Boston put on an offensive showcase in the fifth, exploding for ten runs. UMass Boston would finish the game off with four more runs, taking the game 14–3 and sweeping the series against the Huskies.
Tuesday, April 9, UMass Boston would make the journey to North Dartmouth, Mass., for a game against an LEC rival in UMass Dartmouth’s Corsairs. Sophomore right-hander Ethan Hunt started on the mound for the Beacons against Freshman Dylan Amaral.
The bats were alive for both teams throughout the contest, starting with the Beacons, who tallied two runs in the top of the second inning off Gouveia’s single up the middle, driving in Jimenez and sophomore Max Garner.
UMass Boston kept this lead well into the bottom of the ninth, limiting UMass Dartmouth’s chances to answer. According to Beacons Athletics, trailing 8–5, the Corsairs rallied back with four runs and walked off the Beacons 9–8 (3).
UMass Boston had little time to recoup, as the Suffolk University Rams came to campus for the start of a two-game series the very next day.
Junior Ross Dexter started game one for the Beacons against TJ Dimitriou for the Rams. According to Beacons Athletics, it was all UMass Boston in game one, starting with triples from Gouveia and Brandon Gaer, scoring six runs in the third inning. Both teams would remain scoreless until the sixth, when the Beacons tallied two more runs. UMass Boston refused to let Suffolk catch up and piled on four more runs, winning game one 12–5 (4).
Game two would fall on the next day at 4 p.m., with UMass Boston sending Thomas Kierce against Suffolk’s John McDevit in a battle of the bullpens, as both players would only start for two innings.
The Beacons started off hot with a two-run RBI double from Blake for four total runs in the first. They would keep the lead throughout the whole match, and stopped a Suffolk comeback in the sixth, winning the game 5–4. (5)
UMass Boston went 4–1 over the five game stretch and look to continue their momentum. Look out for their next home game against Worcester State Wednesday, April 17. (1)
