The latest season of The College Tour, hosted by Alex Boylan, featured UMass Boston in an episode published Oct. 7.
The show visits college campuses and interviews students about their school and their experiences. UMass Boston was featured in Season 12, Episode 13.
The episode featured ten students highlighting their experiences at the university. Each segment allowed the student to express what UMass Boston has allowed them to accomplish and how they will apply these opportunities in their future endeavors. The episode provides an in-depth look at how some of the programs and aspects of campus life function.
Second-year grad student Chirag Nemani discussed the business analytics master’s program on the show.
Nemani talked about how he felt honored to represent the school in this way. “This university has given me experiences, lessons, and a backpack full of memories,” he said, adding, “While the moment lasted a few seconds, it was long enough to make me feel like I was doing something to give back to this university.”
Fourth-year political science student Kaushar Barejiya, who spoke on student organizations, said, “It may sound trite to some, but it’s true, and I wanted to add depth to that fact by sharing my own experiences. Overall, it was a phenomenal experience to represent our school and make the experience for prospective students a little more relatable.”
Nemani and Barejiya credited campus photographer Javier Rivas as a major supporter throughout the process.
Third-year IT management student Dave Durrell Ndecham discussed finding a sense of belonging as an international student. “I found representing the school much more exhilarating than I expected. Being a part of a historical moment in our school’s history gave me much pride when I looked back at how timid I was on my arrival,” said Ndecham.
Second-year student Maisan Nguyen discussed the nursing program.
Nguyen talked about the process of working with the film crew, stating, “I really enjoyed working with the show’s team. I was nervous coming into this project because it was something I had never done before, but they made it easy and fun.”
Second-year undergraduate student Ashanti McLean, who discussed the environmental studies programs and opportunities, also expressed gratitude toward the team: “I really enjoyed working with the show’s team because they were really patient but full of energy. If I messed up with my lines they never responded with frustration, which I appreciated, and they would try to make jokes to make me more comfortable and at ease.”
McLean, an environmental studies and sustainability major, also talked about how this show can be a way for incoming students to discover a career path that appeals to them. “I know there’s a lot to offer here at UMB, and prospective students deserve to see what their potential future might look like. I think especially in a major like mine, where I never really was exposed to seeing students on this path, it might inspire students to choose a direction that speaks to them.”
Other interviewees included third-year student and co-founder of the robotics club Olivia Moos, who discussed the computer engineering program; fourth-year communications and management student Isabella Pino, who discussed the first-generation student experience and on-campus work; third-year early education student Rebekkah Tunik, who discussed UMass Boston’s support services for students with disabilities; second-year student Sam Stanley, who discussed the theater program; and third-year student Emanuel Zayas, who discussed the athletics and sports leadership programs.
