The men’s lacrosse team played three games spread out over two weeks, starting against the Southern Maine Huskies April 14 which resulted in a whopping 29-6 win.
The Beacons kept this momentum alive when they took on the Keene State Owls April 18, returning with another 19-10 win. The Western Connecticut Wolves broke the Beacons’ momentum April 21, yielding a 6-9 loss for UMass Boston.
Even though the Huskies opened April 14, the Beacons responded with a seven-goal first quarter. Sophomore Cole Allan lit the score board for the Beacons minutes after the Huskies’ goal. This set the stage for sophomores Patrick Dwinnells and Jack Schartner, and junior Nolen Beauregard, concluding the first quarter with a 7-3 Beacons lead.
The second quarter proved to be scoreless for the Huskies. Senior Matthew Hutchings was an absolute offensive force as he opened the scoring in the second quarter. Freshman Jackson King, senior Brayden MacLean and Beauregard all contributed to the 20-3 halftime lead. By the end of the fourth quarter, the Beacons’ relentless offense helped secure their 29-6 victory over the Huskies.
April 18, the Beacons were still riding the high from their weekday win. Hutchings opened the game in just five minutes. The opponent was quick to retaliate, scoring an equalizer just minutes later, but Hutchings quickly secured a 2-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Beacons embark on a nine-goal run. Sophomore Matthew Konareski scored the first goal of the quarter in just 41 seconds followed by two goals from Schartner and Hutchings. Senior Jaden Cronin and sophomore Tyler Hilgert netted their own as well, securing a 11-1 lead for the Beacons entering halftime.
The Beacons carried this momentum into the third quarter, extending their lead to 17-3. Keene State tried their best to level the field with the Beacons and netted seven goals in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late. The game concluded with a 19-10 Beacon win.
April 21, the Beacons faced the Western Connecticut Wolves in a critical conference game. The team started off hot, securing a 3-0 lead early on in the first quarter. Allan and Konareski further extended this lead, and they entered halftime with a 5-2 lead over the Wolves.
Schartner completed his hat-trick in the third quarter, pushing the Beacons to a 6-3 lead. But the Wolves picked up their pace, dominating the rest of the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Wolves lock down their defense, making it difficult for the Beacons to penetrate and resulting in a 6-9 loss.
