The Women’s Center and Student Multicultural Affairs have been hosting and will continue to host events in honor of Women’s History Month throughout the month of March.
A kickoff brunch was held March 2 in the Women’s Center suite in Room 3100 of Campus Center from 12 to 2 p.m. The brunch advertised future events, and participants were given the chance to write letters to the women they admire.
On March 9, the Women’s History Month Resource Fair was held in Campus Center’s first floor terrace from 11 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. The event served to connect students with women-centric resources both on and off campus. Event-goers took Polaroid photos and posted notes they wrote for women who inspire them on a display board.
A screening of the documentary “Tarantism Revisited” was held March 12th. The documentary focused on the dancing phenomenon of tarantism in Italy and was shown in Campus Center Room 3540 at 5 p.m.
Other clubs on campus besides the SMCA and Women’s Center have also been hosting events in honor of Women’s History Month. Casa Latina hosted Flores De Fuerza on the first floor of Campus Center, an event that featured stories of Latina trailblazers and flowers that people could pick up for either themselves or an important woman in their lives. Casa Latina also hosted a competition called “Finish the Lyrics: Women Who Run the Charts” on the second-floor terrace of Campus Center March 12th at 5 p.m. to celebrate the music from famous Latina artists.
More events are scheduled following spring break, starting with The Pink Courtroom event on the 25th of March. The Pink Courtroom is inspired by the YouTube series by the same name created by media personality Nella Rose. There will be debates on campus and public issues. Attendees will be sorted into opponents, proponents and jury members and food will be provided.
There will also be a Parenting Justice Conference on March 27th and a Transgender Day of Visibility Celebration and Resource Fair on the 31st in collaboration with the Queer Student Center.
Finally, there is a Women in the Workplace Networking event to close out the month taking place on the 30th. This event is in collaboration with McKinsey & Co, a management consulting firm, and Lean In, an organization dedicated to empowering women through advocacy. The cost to attend the event is $8 for students, $15 for alumni and $20 for the general public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballrooms and last until 7:45 p.m. Volunteers are currently being accepted and compensation is being provided through free admission and food from the event.
