As of October 11, the UMass Boston Hall of Fame has twelve new members.
Among the highlighted alumni inducted two weeks ago were Ken “Nippy” Hall (1984), the all-time men’s basketball scoring leader; Stephanie Bouges (1995), who is first in blocks and fourth in points and rebounds all-time for women’s basketball; Dice Kelly (1970), one of Boston State College’s best defensive hockey players of all-time; Bill Rafuse (1974), arguably the best lacrosse player in Boston State’s school history; and the 1972 men’s lacrosse team, which went 11-2 and went to the National Tournament.
“It was a tremendous event,” said David Marsters, head of Information Technology at UMass Boston. “All the alumni were ecstatic with the turnout.”
The event, which was held at Umass Boston, featured Chancellor J. Keith Motley and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, who received a Distinguished Alumni Award, courtesy of UMass Boston.
“All ten inductees deserve the same amount of recognition,” said Marsters after the ceremony.
Established in 2003, the Hall of Fame now has 51 members. The attendance at the ceremony was 390.
Leavitt Continues to Shine for UMass Boston C.C.
26:30 was enough time for Senior Mike Leavitt to finish the Emmanuel College Saints Invitational-and win.
This marks the second time Leavitt has won the race, with his previous victory coming in 2005. Leavitt’s victory helped propel the UMass Boston Men to a second-place overall finish, 30 points behind Wheaton College.
Sam Sanchez, Patrick Day, Ryan Norton, and Filipe Zamborlini all finished within eight minutes of Leavitt to round out the field of runners for the UMass Boston men.
Newcomer Donavan Leads Lady Beacons
In her first race as a Lady Beacon, Junior Allison Donavan helped her team to a third-place victory at Franklin Park. With a time of 21:49, Donavan finished 14th overall in the five-kilometer version of the Emmanuel College Saints Invitational.
Caitlin McQueen, Yelena Bryant, Joy Risko, and Sophia Sieveking finished within two minutes of UMass Boston pacesetter Allison Donavan. The Lady Beacons finished 99 points behind overall winner Wheaton College.
Thompson Continues to Take Home LEC Awards
Freshman volleyball star Emily Thompson won her second career Little East Conference award for the week of October 8-14.
This time, Thompson was awarded for her all-around play, as she took home Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honors. Thompson has been carrying the load defensively while her team has rattled off eight straight wins and counting. For the week, Thompson averaged 4.64 digs per game with her match-high coming against Emerson College, where she raked up 19 over five games, leading the Beacons to the win.
Thompson’s previous LEC award was for Defensive Player of the Week early in September. She ranks fifth in the Little East with 4.23 digs per game.
Lady Beacons of Tennis Beat Southern Maine for Second Win
After two losses, the Lady Beacons bounced back to win 7-2 at home against the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, October 13. Wonder twins Aurora Lormeus and Emily Johnson soundly defeated their opponents 8-5, while Brittney Engel and Bing Nguy won by way of forfeit to give UMass Boston a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches.
In singles play, the Lady Beacons slammed the door shut on Southern Maine by taking all but one match. Lormeus cruised to an easy victory while Johnson struggled at times. Kristen Chan soundly defeated her opponent in the first set, but lost momentum in the second. However, Chan was able to over come 10 unforced errors to take the second set 7-5. Novita Dwei’s win by forfeit was icing on the cake.
