Boston Folk Festival 2003
September 3, 2003
What’s your pleasure? Is it blues, singer-songwriters, Celtic, bluegrass or world music – do you like to celebrate tradition, or to discover the new up-and-coming artists? Whatever the style or interest, folk music brings everyone together to sing along, dance, or sit back and enjoy. The breath of folk music is as rich as it is diverse. You don’t have to be a connoisseur to enjoy folk festivals – but it helps to have a love for all different forms of music. And, if the first few years are any indication, you’ll experience it all at the sixth annual Boston Folk Festival on our five stages, including a stretch-out-the-blanket setting to our intimate coffeehouse. It’s the biggest folk event in Boston, and the greatest place to be if you like live music.
All of the performers for the sixth annual Boston Folk Festival have been announced -Emmylou Harris, Greg Brown, Tom Rush, Richard Shindell, Danu, Kate Campbell, Paul Brady, Koko Taylor & Her Blues Machine and many more, nearly 100 in all!
Songwriting Finalists will be named on September 3, 2003. What an incredible process it’s been – WUMB had more than 350 entries in our Songwriting Contest, but the reviewing committees have now narrowed the field down to five. They will be announcing the finalists who will perform on Friday night, September 19 in front of Tom Rush, Joel Mabus and hundreds of Festival attendees. Tune in to WUMB 91.9FM at 9am on September 3 for the announcement, or check online.
The Sixth Annual WUMB Radio Boston Folk Festival kicks off September 19 with activities for the first time, from 7-10pm showcasing Songwriting Contest finalists. Then Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21, there will be two full days of activities from 11am-7pm, with five stages each day including the famous Boston Folk Festival “Sea Shanties” boat while touring Boston Harbor. There will be activities for the kids, food & craft vendors and a few surprises including, the new Blues Experience Workshop.
In order to celebrate the “Year of the Blues,” WUMB has created a special Blues Experience Workshop to let you experience the blues first hand. Learn to play harmonica, learn about the guitar styles of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and Muddy Waters and more. The workshop will be conducted by veteran jazz and blues musician, T.J.Wheeler.
